Enroll in obedience training. Places like PetSmart have decent training programs for a good price. It's the best investment you'll make. It teaches YOU how to teach your dog to behave. I have adopted older animals with behavioral issues (shelter dogs). I have 4 right now and they are home alone and loose in the house all day while I'm at work. I never come home to surprises. They don't chew inappropriately, they're house broken, and they no longer snack from the litter box.
