How would I make my bedroom, light, airy, and breezy?

My and my husband's bedroom was sponge painted with a dark gold color before we moved into the house 2 years ago. We had been working on remodeling and redecorating 3 other rooms first. Now it is time to paint our bedroom and I'm really at a loss of what to do. Currently, the room is very dark. The curtains are burgundy, which does match the gold walls, but it's so dark and I'm really starting to feel I'm in a cave. I do not want to go with white walls. I am not afraid of color so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
