If Islam is about love and peace how do you explain stonings, sharia law, abuse of gays, family honour etc?

Every time I hear a Muslim talk about Islamic tolerance, I remind them of the Moors, Muslims who invaded and occupied Spain during medieval times. That usually tells them that I know better, and that my BS indicator is pretty hard.
