What should i do if i want to be a fireman?

I am currently getting my fire science degree and will get cpr certified. I would like to know what looks good on a resume because i am aware that it is not easy becoming a fireman. My sister told me that i should volunteer or help in some way, so i can get a feel and so it shows my commitment but i don't know where to start and i am not afraid to ask for some help. Any advice or answers will be greatly, greatly appreciated.
